Originally produced as part of a larger, site-specific installation for Art Basel Miami Beach 2006, Lawrence Weiner’s piece (LO & BEHOLD) (MIRA & VE) has become a permanent fixture of The Wolfsonian’s iconic lobby fountain. Like much of Weiner’s oeuvre, it is grounded in language and a mix of common signs—recognizing Miami’s diverse culture and its large Hispanic community through the incorporation of both English and Spanish.

Weiner delves into symbolism carried by text, exploring the interaction and application of punctuation, shape, and color. His artworks embody the complexity of simplicity, and are cultural signposts of their time. Fabrication is a critical aspect of his process, and over the years it has taken various forms: in film and video scenarios, as songs on records and CDs, as cartoons on DVDs, on posters, books, multiples, and editions, as well as the installations for which he is perhaps best known.

(LO & BEHOLD) (MIRA & VE) was generously supported by Kate and Andy Spade and Asset Management Advisors.

Art and Design in the Modern Age provides an overview of the museum’s holdings of American and European artifacts from 1850 to 1950. Culled from the Wolfsonian collection are approximately 300 works in a variety of formats, ranging from books, posters, and postcards to decorative arts, architectural models, paintings, and sculptures. Focal points include design-reform movements, urbanism, industrial design, transportation, world’s fairs, advertising, and political propaganda.

This evergreen exhibition, inaugurated in November 1995 and periodically updated, examines the ways in which art and design have both influenced and adapted to the modern world. During the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries, the fine arts were characterized by unprecedented experimentation and innovation, while design became a critical issue for producers and consumers as machine-made objects replaced those crafted by hand. The works on display demonstrate designers’ responses to the profound social and technological changes stimulated by the Industrial Revolution and reveal how people living in this tumultuous period viewed the world and their place in it.

American artists produced a flood of depictions of working men and women during the 1930s, a time of mass unemployment and union organizing. In doing so, they created art that only partly captured how the industrial revolution and the growth of the service economy had transformed the nature of work over the past half-century. The paintings and sculptures in this installation will highlight forms of labor—growing crops, forging metal, cutting stone, and sewing clothes—that grew out of older traditions and relied on physical strength and manual skill. These proved to be more picturesque and heroic subjects than many purely modern jobs, such as office, retail, or assembly line work.

Propaganda artists on all sides frequently turned to satire as a means of rallying morale on the home front during the First World War. While official propaganda generally glorified the cause of the nation, cartoonists and illustrators created a flood of magazine and sheet music covers, postcards, and children’s books that mocked enemy leaders and soldiers. Wit as Weapon, featuring selections from The Wolfsonian–FIU Library, will show the range of satirical techniques employed during the war, aimed at both adults and children.

CHESS TABLES
ON LONG-TERM VIEW

Jim Drain is best known for his work using textiles, specifically yarn, as part of the highly-influential Fort Thunder community in Rhode Island. He was also a member of Forcefield, a collective whose practice combined music, performance, film and installation, and exhibited in the 2002 Whitney Biennial.

For The Bass Projects, Drain produced two chess tables and four chairs, designed to provide a social gathering point for chess enthusiasts in Collins Park. The project is inspired by public chess tables in other urban parks, such as Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass.; Tompkins Square Park in New York City; and the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris.

Drain’s chess tables and chairs explore the use of pattern through a complex geometric design that uses steel tubing and terrazzo tiles. Visitors are encouraged to activate the public artwork by borrowing chess (or checker) pieces from the museum’s front desk during museum opening hours (temporarily located at the Miami Beach Regional Library space).

Jim Drain (b. 1975, Cleveland) lives and works in Miami, Fla. He has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad, with solo exhibitions at the University of Florida; Locust Projects, Miami; and the Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas, Austin. His work is in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of Art; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Pérez Art Museum, Miami; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Drain was one of two recipients of the 2005 Baloise Prize, and was recently recognized alongside Bhakti Baxter for creating some of the “best public art projects in the nation” by Americans for the Arts. Drain and the artist Naomi Fisher run The Bas Fisher Invitational space in Miami.
